双柿舎

シェイクスピアの翻訳家としても有名な明治の文豪「坪内逍遙」が、大正９年から昭和１０年に亡くなるまでの１５年間を過ごした住居です。庭にある２本の柿の古木から双柿舎の名がつけられました。門の扁額は会津八一の筆によるものです。

毎年２月２８日の命日には、起雲閣で、逍遙を偲ぶ記念祭が行われます。

Soshisha (House of Tsubouchi Shoyo)

This is the house Tsubouchi Shoyo (1859-1935), an author, critic, playwrighte, and editor of the Meiji Era, spent the last 15 years of his life.  He is also known for translating Shakespeare.    Soshisha (twin persimmon) was named after the two trees in the yard.  On the gate is a wooden tablet of Aizu Yaichi's calligraphy.  You are admitted only in the garden with a private library, and you need to present your ID to enter the premises.

●Directions: From Atami Station, take a bus for Baien or Ainohara Danchi (approx. 10-min-ride) to the "Kinomiya Station" stop.  It is about 8 min. from Atami Station by taxi.  It is about 5 min. walk from the Kinomiya Station.
